Interesting Information!! Buddhist art from the Dvaravati kingdom will be exhibited in Bangkok

The art items, totalling 149 from 12 national museums across the nation, are to be put together at a special exhibition, “Dvaravati Art: The Early Buddhist Art of Thailand”, at the Bangkok National Museum that begins tomorrow and lasts until October 9.

The event is a cooperation between the Fine Arts Department of Thailand and the French embassy in Bangkok, which previously held a special Dvaravati exhibition at the Guimet Museum in Paris earlier this year. After the exhibition in Bangkok, all the art items will be returned to their respective museums, mostly in neighbouring provinces in the central plains, including Nakhon Pathom, Ratchaburi and Suphan Buri.

Although the central plains are believed to be the cradle of the Dvaravati civilisation that prospered between the 12th and 16th centuries of the Buddhist era (6th to 11th century AD), its influence also extended to the South of Thailand _ prevailing in the Wiang Sa district in Surat Thani and in Yarang district in Pattani _ and to the North _ gaining a foothold in the old Haripunchai state that is now Lamphun at the end of the period in the 16th century.
Most of the selected items, which range from the dharmachakra, or wheel of the law, to Buddha images, stucco depicting Jataka stories, decorative dwarf sculptures and votive tablets are related to Buddhist art, the theme of the exhibition in the French museum.

The Fine Arts Department will launch a special publication on Dvaravati art and civilisation for this special event. There will be two talks on Dvaravati art by art experts including Prof Pasuk Intaravuth, Kongkaew Veeraprachak and Asst Prof Sakchai Saisingh, in the Prince Damrong Rajanuphap room on the museum compound on August 21 and 23. Seats are limited to 100 for each round of talks. Included in the programme are special tours by a team of museum curators

Reduce,Reuse,Recycle~~Bottle Made Temple In Thailand

Built using more than a million beer bottles, this incredible temple in the north-east of Thailand is a novel way to recycle any empties.The resident Buddhist monks at the Wat Pa Maha Chedi Kaew complex encourage local authorities to deposit any used bottles at the temple which they then use to build new structures.Having already built the a temple and even shelters, the monks who live in the town of Khun Han really have got into the spirit of recycling.
 Recycling doesn’t stop at building the temple’s buildings – mosaics around the temple, predominantly of Buddha, are made out of bottle caps.Besides being ego-friendly, the disused bottles don’t fade, provide good lighting and are easy to clean.’The monks at Wat Lan Kuad started collecting the bottles they needed to build their temple complex in 1984,’ said one tourist at the site.




‘They kept this up until they had nearly one million recycled bottles ready to construct their pagodas and temple.’Even though drinking is a sin in Buddhism, this still seems like a positive use of beer and lager bottles.’Representing the cleansing of the human mind, the beer-bottle-temple is now on an approved list of eco-friendly sightseeing tours in South-East Asia.

Somdej Toh


Somdej Toh was born in kamphaeng Phet Province , possibly the son of King Rama I. He studied the Buddhist scriptures of the Pali with several Buddhist masters. After becoming a well-known monk, he became the preceptor for Prince Mongkut, later King Rama IV, when Mongkut became a monk.
During Rama IV’s reign Somdej Toh was given the ceremonial name Phra Buddhacharn Toh Phomarangsi.
He was noted for the skill of his preaching and his use of Thai Poetry to reflect the beauty of Buddhism, and for making amulets call Somdej.
